Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is enlargement of the prostate that is not cancer. NIDDK identifies it as the most common prostate problem in men older than 50.
Possible symptoms
Prostate problems can be associated with frequent urination, urgency, dribbling, a weak stream, trouble starting a stream, incomplete emptying, and waking often at night.
Diagnosis matters
Urinary symptoms do not automatically mean BPH. A health professional may evaluate symptoms, medical history, medicines, physical findings, and appropriate testing to determine the cause.
Treatment is individualized
Depending on severity and the person, BPH management may involve watchful waiting/lifestyle measures, medicines, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery. Supplements should not replace evaluation of persistent or concerning symptoms.
