Dietary supplements can contain biologically active ingredients, and they can interact with medications or be inappropriate in some health situations.
Before taking a prostate supplement
- Review the full ingredient list and amounts.
- Check for allergies and duplicate ingredients across your supplements.
- Ask a pharmacist or clinician about medication interactions.
- Do not delay evaluation of blood in urine, inability to urinate, fever, severe pain, or persistent urinary changes.
- Do not interpret “FDA-registered facility” language as FDA approval of the supplement.
FDA and supplement approval
FDA explains that dietary supplements are not FDA-approved to treat or prevent disease. A product marketed to treat, prevent, cure, or alleviate disease symptoms may be regulated as a drug depending on the claims and circumstances.
Advertising claims
FTC guidance says health-related advertising claims should be truthful, not misleading, and supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence. Disclaimers do not rescue an otherwise deceptive disease-treatment claim.
